When Georgia homeowners suspect they may have mold in their home their first instinct is to get a mold test done. Many times this step may not be necessary or effective for identifying the source of the problem.
Do you see visible mold?
If the mold is already visible and growing a mold test is only going to tell you what you already know, you have mold. It is usually unnecessary to get a test done in this circumstance. What you really need is a game plan to remediate the mold properly. We can perform a visual inspection. During the inspection, a professional can determine the extent of the contamination and provide a remediation plan and estimate for a modest fee. Going this route will much less than getting a test for mold that you can already see.
I can smell something musty but can’t see any visible mold.
In this situation, testing may be more valuable, but you still need a professional to identify the source of the problem. Mold usually doesn’t grow without a moisture source and many times a trained professional can identify the source without an actual mold test.
If I don’t need testing before remediation when is it necessary to test for mold?
The most common time that we recommend getting a mold test done is after the remediation is complete. This is called “post-remediation-verification testing”. It will ensure that the problem is taken care of completely or if there are additional hidden problems. We also recommend getting testing done in commercial settings, before selling your home, or if there are health concerns related to mold.
Can’t I just get a home mold test kit and test the mold myself?
We would advise against it. Don’t take it from us though, The EPA states “Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals. Who have specific experience in designing mold-sampling protocols, sampling methods, and interpreting results. Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.” Mold test results from DIY kits are often incorrect. The sampling and testing process is something that should be left to the professional. Even our company of mold remediation professionals leave it up to the Industrial Hygienists to provide a sampling.
